What You Can Earn

Municipalities, government agencies, and private security companies all employ individuals with Criminal Justice degrees. By 2010 the overall demand for these positions is expected to increase by 27%. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the starting salary for a Federal correctional officer was about $27,000 a year in 2001. Salaries for police officers and sheriff’s deputies range from $31,410 to $43,450, plus overtime, which can be significant. Median annual earnings of security guards were $17,570 in 2000, with entry-level guards employed by the Federal government in 2001 being $21,950 to $27,190.

Career Opportunities

The demand for law enforcement personnel has been rising for years, due to the government’s continuing efforts to meet society’s need for safer living environments. This means that Criminal Justice graduates will find an increased number of opportunities to work as a police officer, sheriff’s deputy, or corrections officer. Those completing this program might also get hired as a security guard, a telecommunications officer, or a private investigator. Other occupations in the field may require additional training, licensing, and/or education.
